Phoenix Middle School is home to nearly 500 students in grades 6-8 who are “beating the odds” when it comes to academic success! The Rock-Walworth County Head Start program (a pre-school program) is also located within the building, as is the Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County.
Each grade has it’s own separate “wing.” Sixth grade students follow a classroom “house” structure, typically staying with their usual classmates throughout the day. As students advance through the grades, they interact with more classmates more often, such as they would in a high school setting.
With the ability to read well being a core component of academic success, each of the Phoenix Middle School teachers focus on literacy. Reading skills development is a part of every class. Because of this Phoenix Middle School students have outpaced the nation at each grade level in reading an math improvement scores over the course of the academic year. Some of the sub-groups of students even placed in the top 1-3 percent of the nation in their skills advancement from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
In addition to the core subject areas (reading, language arts, math, science, social studies), Phoenix Middle School also offers an array of classes, from technical education in our new Fab Lab, to family and consumer sciences, to foreign language. We also offer a variety of bands and choirs, and we have one of the only middle school orchestra programs in the county. As a district, our music programs have been nationally recognized several times as being some of the best in the nation.
As a part of our district-wide One-to-One program, each student is also issued a Chromebook to assist in their learning and bring the vast resources of the Internet to their fingertips. Many of our curriculum texts are now electronic, which keeps the most up-to-date information in front of students. The students are also allowed to take the Chromebooks home with them where there learning can continue in a safe online environment (the devices still connect through our web servers so inappropriate material is filtered).
